In their sequined robes and party hats the band look like escapees from a senior citizens Christmas party, perhaps led to freedom by the Jack Nicholson antics of Marshall Allen. At 86, he holds the Arkestra in a vice-like grip and plays alto like a devil. He also squawks and squeaks on his EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) pushing the cosmic vibe along. When Sun Ra was alive, the band seemed to lack discipline, but tonight they’re as tight as any group of stranded volcanic refugees can be.
Sun Ra Arkestra Members Missing but Soca Specialist Weighs in
Some people think that the Sun Ra Arkestra is one of the greatest big bands of all time. Led by pianist Sun Ra, until his death in 1993, they play anything from straight-ahead swing to free cosmic cacophony, often switching styles in mid tune. Ra was a skilled keyboard player and arranger but his greatest strength was inspiring and teaching his musicians to improvise freely in a big band environment. Often the result was chaotic but it was never less than inspiring. Now, under the direction of alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, one of the original members [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they just get better and better.
Hit That Jive Jack
Tonight they were reduced to a seven piece with one trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, percussion and bass player missing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereabouts unknown, but they were joined by a steel drum player, a Soca-specialist to add weight. Slightly uncertain on some of the bop numbers, in the up-tempo tracks he amazed, convincing the audience that steel drums are a useful addition to the big band line up.

By concert standards, Café Oto is tiny, with a capacity of around 150, and it’s basic – seating is hard wooden foldaway chairs and the lighting is provided by bare electric bulbs, with a couple of industrial halogen lamps. It’s in Hackney, in the East of London, home to many young and struggling artists, and this makes it the perfect venue for a band like the Arkestra. Pensioners and toddlers alike were enthralled by the spectacle.
The band had played two gigs here earlier in the week when the lineup was:
Café Oto is East London’s Avant Garde Premier Venue
As the seven players entered the room chanting, in their sparkly costumes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was a hint of the sci-fi mysticism of the Twilight Zone but soon it morphed into the up-tempo song “Face the Music”. This was the template for the evening, spacey moods and riff-laden blues inspiring the packed crowd. Highlights were a straight-ahead version of “Deep Purple”, the cosmic song “Lights on the Satellite”, the earthy sound of “Volcano Blues”, and a medley including “Space is the Place”. Their encore was the jump-jive standard “Hit That Jive Jack” and nobody could doubt that they’d been doing exactly that for the entirety of their performance. For this corner of East London, the volcano done good.
