This high esteem and efficacy being put on Excommunicationone would believe that the
Priests should endeavour to conserve the reverence thereofbeing the Basis and main
support of their Authority; and that therefore they should not so easily make use thereof on
every frivolous occasionthat so familiarity might not render it contemptible and the
salvation of men's Souls not seem to be played with on every slight and trivial Affair: But
such is the much to be lamented poverty in this Churchthat they are not only forced to
sell Excommunicationsbut the very Sacraments; and to expose the most reverend and
mysterious Offices of Religion unto sale for maintenance and support of Priesthood.
