Cowboys Owner/GM Jerry Jones Wants to See More of RB Felix Jones on Field
The Cowboys are just 1-2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but look at how they stack up statistically. Dallas is fourth in passing, fifth in yards, eighth in yards allowed and rush defense and 14th in pass defense. What's missing? The Cowboys are 26th in rushing.
Given that starter [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and No. 3 back Tashard Choice is averaging an atrocious 2.6, Dallas owner/general manager Jerry Jones wants to see more of backup Felix Jones (no relation). And whatever Jerry wants, Jerry gets when it comes to his Cowboys.
"He's just too much of a threat and that was our intention in preseason coming out, no matter whether he's getting a chance to be in the running game, but certainly in the passing game as well," Jones said during a radio appearance. "I really look for you to see a lot more of Felix Jones."
Remember that the idea of rookie Akwasi Owusu-Ansah replacing Felix Jones on kickoff returns was to free him up for more touches on offense. But that hasn't really happened. Jones is averaging 8.7 carries and catches so far compared to 8.4 in 2009. He has 22 carries for 88 yards and four catches for 38 yards.
"We can hand him the ball a little bit more, so we're going to try to do that," said Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, who knows a directive from the NFL's most hands-on owner when he hears one.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted that Jones produced 569 yards on 77 touches (12.8 per game) during Dallas' final six games in 2009.
"He's a guy that's proven ... that he can run inside and make big plays and also run outside and make big plays," said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
Jones doesn't have a run over 15 yards so far and he gained just 14 yards combined on three of his four catches. Sunday's foe, Tennessee, ranks 10th against the run and fifth on defense, but look for the speedy third-year man from Arkansas to be more involved than usual against the Titans.
