|
|
The album takes a break from the Wonder-centred style of the first two tracks, as 'Keep Him Like He Is' delivers through its recurring vocal motif a more feminine sound which better contemplates Syreeta's flowing vocal style. The wah-wah guitars and strings give it a more commercial sound than the previous track, and gives an accessibility to the song.
Syreeta opens with 'I Love Every Little Thing About You', a squelchier, funkier version of the horn-driven track which appears on Wonder's own Music Of My Mind. Not as euphoric as Wonder's own version, the track still gives Syreeta the chance to use her more delicate vocal style on one of the tracks she co-wrote with Wonder during this period.
'To Know You Is To Love You' returns to the delicate timbre of its opening, as a short jam takes over the track, guitars, keys and strings bringing the album to a more rocking, soulful close. Syreeta did not sell well, and for the follow-up Motown decided to cash-in on Wonder's popularity by featuring his name more prominently.
More strings are in evidence on 'What Love Has Joined Together', underscored by some conventional piano playing by Wonder which is as daring in its use of chords as any on his own records. The track threatens to explode in a string-drenched Air Max 24-7 sneakers, over-emotional chorus at several points, but proves restrained throughout.
The opening of 'Happiness' - written by Syreeta herself - is nursery rhyme-like, with backing singers sounding akin to those found on an Aretha Franklin track. Wonder keeps the song from entering too conventional and uninspiring a sound by dropping some voice bag sounds in to the mix, but 'Happiness' is let down by Syreeta's lack of vocal power.
A more successful use of the voice bag is in evidence on a cover of The Beatles' 'She's Leaving Home' from the defining Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). Wonder produces distorted backing vocals through the device, whilst Syreeta produces a strong vocal, which gives the track more emotion than the detached Lennon-McCartney original.
'How Many Days' has a classical air max 97 shoes, pre-war ballad feel to its composition. Wilson and Alroy's Record Reviews liken the track to Wonder's own 'You And I' from Talking Book, but note Syreeta's voice does not have the drama of Wonder's.
The swirling, political statement of 'Black Maybe' features a slight distortion on Syreeta's vocal, whilst the synthesizers echo around her and a guitar drops minor chords to add to the slight sense of despair which pervades the sound and lyric of the track.
Synthesizers replace strings to bring texture to 'Baby Don't You Let Me Lose This', and give the track a more unusual feel than the two which precede it. Some more interesting backing vocals, placed at unconventional times throughout the track give the song a more engaging feel.

Whilst not as adventurous and defining as his own records Nike Air Max Skyline, Syreeta features flashes of brilliance, and display why she contributed to some of Wonder's best-love
Syreeta closes with 'To Know You Is To Love You', a duet between Syreeta and Stevie Wonder. Wonder opens the track, his slightly distorted vocal (using the same effect as on Music Of My Mind's 'Girl Blue') floating over a simple percussion and electric keyboard section. Syreeta's appearance brings in a plethora of musical sounds, with a more understated string section than on other selections.
