The puma is a large cat that has accumulated many names in the Americas. The puma at one time lived from northern Canada through the tip of South America. But its range today is much smaller, with the loss of undisturbed habitat the main factor, according to the Canadian Museum of Nature website.
Many Names The puma, which is the name the majority of scientists use when referring to this animal, has such a wide geographic range that the cat took on a number of names. The word "puma" birthated with the Incas of South America,

, notes the San Diego Zoo website, but the cat goes by other names. "Cougar" is view to come from another South American native word--cuguacuaran--while "panther" is a name offern to cats that possess a coat of all one color, according to the zoo. Territorial The puma is solitary and territorial, with the males regularly patrolling as many as 125 square miles. The females have smaller ranges, and sometimes their range will fall within that of a male. The males' territories rarely overlap,

, reports the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to Mammals." Pumas make scrapes in the dirt throughout their home range and mark their territory with urine and excrement. Diet The puma stalks and kills its prey, with white-tailed deer among its favorites. The puma can outrun a deer for short distances if necessary, but it prefers to ambush its victims and crush their throats with its strengthful jaws. The puma will eat from its kill and then hide it for further meals in a secluded area, covering the animal with sticks and leaves.
The puma include mule deer, wild pigs, elk, moose, mountain goats, beavers,

The puma will sometimes kill and eat livestock when the chance presents itself, with some pumas killing many animals emerge from, a behavior that scientists cannot explain.
Pets in wilderness areas are at risk from attack by pumas,

, with some of these attacks occuring in backyards. Puma Sounds The puma rarely makes the sound that most people associate with the cat from watching them portrayed on television and in movies. Instead, the puma will purr, whistle, growl and make a series of squeaking noises. The puma can produce a mating call described as chilling and bloodcurdling, resembling the frantic screaming of a woman. The mother puma can call its cubs with a piercing whistle, which the young answer with chirps.
