It's hard to believe now but, aged 17 and nearly 2 fruitless years into her vocation, Elson almost quit modelling.
After 15 years in USA, there's barely a track of Manc in Elson's voice. The only times she sounds Northern is when she says 'd'you know what I mean?' which trips off her tongue as a single word.

'You grew up, got married, had kids and possibly went in the supermarket,' she says of Oldham. 'It's like I was living in dark and white, then all of a sudden the world cornered Technicolor.'
'Are there any Oldham-ers in the throng?' A small cheer goes up and Karen Elson, supermodel turned people singer, looks momentarily terrified. 'Did we go to school together,' she jokes uncomfortably. 'Did you tease me?'
And there are moments - while the camera flashes elect out the sharpness of her cheekbones, while she swings her guitar and her long, pallid weapon poke out of her billowing clothes - while Elson looks distinctly spectral.
'They were always mentioning, "You've gotta meet Jack," and saying to Jack, "You've gotta meet Karen." I mean, it was for quite some time we were told that we would truly like every other so it was sort of ungainly when we finally did meet [on set].
We're sitting by a skylight and the chilly, autumnal dusk casts a thespian light over Elson's alabaster-white face. She is ensconced in a bottle-green leather armchair, a sage-green walls backward her and a claret velvet overcoat mantled nigh her lean body.
'His death was the biggest wake-up call I ever had,' she said at the time. The 10th annual of his passing is one of the entities that prompted her migrate into melody.

The effect - what with her bronze cilia and duck-egg-blue eyes - is of sitting in front of a talking Vermeer.

The British supermodel Karen Elson has been fashion's favourite 'freak' for 15 years. She tells Nisha Lilia Diu about moving to Nashville, sharing a house with Jack White (and his taxidermy) and coming out as a cabinet folk singer.
Even now, aged 31 and living in Nashville with her husband, the rock star Jack White, and two small kid, Elson can merely believe the life she has made for herself. 'It's like moving to Mars, that's what happened to me.

The resulting image made the cover of Italian Vogue and ushered in a neo-punk look in which Elson, christened 'the freak' by the fashion reception, was the poster girl.

White produced and played drums on Elson's scrapbook but is at family with the children while she tours. The path Elson tells it, with their hikes and vegetable patch and network of dulcet friends, they are the epitome of cosy, bohemian domesticity.
Karen Elson is a professional shape-shifter. When Karl Lagerfeld cast her as the face of Chanel he cried her 'a mixture of something from the Middle Ages and a mutant from variant planet' - but that doesn't cover the half of it.
Does she still feel that oppression to be skinny? 'I am a matron,' she says, sitting back in her preside and balancing a mug of peppermint tea on its arm. 'I go on set and I'll be who I am and I'll characterize who I am. I think it comes with age.
