Harry “Playdough” Krum does not disappoint with this truth-slingin’, hooked-out “Don’t Drink the Water

,” his 7Spin Music debut. Challenging and even confrontational at times, the emcee holds nothing back on this self-produced project. He has able production assists from friends like Dust (on standout track “Leave You,” where it’s all about the mission) and Beat Rabbi (handling the beats on “Saddle Up” behind Playdough’s rapid-fire sermonizing on using the mind God gave you, rather than being “a vulture, another pop culture clone.” His rhymes are tight and articulate, speaking strongly about the evils of mainstream musical categorizing (“You Sound Funny”) and even more so, mainstream thinking. You gotta give the brother big props for his hard-pressing anti-conformity message here. The title track, with its wildly addictive hooks and salsa beats

, calls the listener unapologetically to use his own mind, to stop blindly following the trends of the marketplace, and the hidden bonus song on the track seconds the motion. “The Difference” hits the same message again, harder

, backed up by the dopest of beats. Strong, strong stuff, should be blasted into the school systems with morning announcements.
One of the album’s best points, besides the obvious (punchy syncopations and infectious beats) is its accessibility. Creative and clear all the way through. There’s a whole lotta self-love going on in “Don’t Drink the Water,” from the fierce attitude of “Tip Your Hat” to the road life realities of “Sandal Sole.” Playdough is liable to pull a muscle patting himself on the back so intently, but hey, what hip-hop artist DOESN’T puff up like a blowfish a few times per album? I think it’s in the hip-hop oath. But maybe you could make the point that it’s warranted by the creative glories of “Don’t Drink the Water.” Playdough loves his work and it shows all over this 7Spin debut.
