As Finkel spoke, Flores begged Cunis to allow him to speak, stomping his feet and biting his lip to hold back tears.
"The scars on (his stepson's) neck are from me holding him back,cheap marlboro cigarettes," Flores said. "I am not a criminal, I am a new man."
Finkel added that Flores has been married for three years and has not had any legal trouble since his arrest.
Flores told the court that he was only acting in self-defense.
Flores, of 280 Elm St., Apt. 18, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder. His next court appearance is Jan. 14.
