The puma is a large cat that has accumulated many names in the Americas. The puma at one time lived from northern Canada through the tip of South America. But its range today is much smaller, with the loss of undisturbed habitat the main factor, according to the Canadian Museum of Nature website.
Many Names The puma, which is the name the majority of scientists use when referring to this animal, has such a wide geographic range that the cat took on a number of names. The mother puma can call its cubs with a piercing whistle, which the young answer with chirps.
