Though state law says stores can’t sell tobacco to anyone under 18, health authorities say younger teens often manage to buy the products. The bill would ban outright the sale or distribution of smokable tobacco products that have a “distinguishable flavor or aroma other than tobacco.” It also would ban tobacco or nicotine products that are composed of smokeless tobacco, such as lozenges, pouches, pills or capsules. “We’re competing with top universities to get NIH funds,” Green said. “They have incredible resources. There’s no way we can compete with those monies unless we also have some resources.” Michelle Hughes came from University of Iowa to the Boys Town National Research Hospital in 2003. She hired research assistants, bought equipment and has won grants totaling $1.2 million. Her work examines how auditory nerves respond to cochlear implant equipment, so it works more effectively, especially in babies and young children. She no longer receives tobacco settlement money. “That’s the whole point of the tobacco settlement money,marlboro red cigarettes, to bring in new scientists and launch their own independent careers,” Hughes said. “It’s sort of like training wheels. You want to get off that and get extramural funding.” Alabama currently taxes cigarettes at 42.5 cents per pack,marlboro gold cigarettes, ranking the state 47th in the nation. If Alabama raised its tax per pack by $1, it would still be below the current national average of $1.45 per pack,wholesale marlboro gold cigarettes,marlboro lights cigarettes, according to figures from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. (Several states currently are considering tobacco tax increases, so it is likely that even with the higher rate Alabama would remain even further below the national average.) It would not be easy to raise the tax. Tobacco company lobbyists would descend upon the Legislature in droves. But it is still the right thing to do. The Legislature should not just raise the cigarette tax. Similar taxes should be imposed on other tobacco products so that teens don’t turn from cigarettes to smokeless tobacco,marlboro cigarettes stock, for instance. Smokeless tobacco causes different kinds of cancers from cigarettes, but it is still addictive and still a major health risk, especially for those who start the habit as teens. |
