Why does so much anger surround the publication of a few
offensive cartoons? The answer is that both sides fear the larger
assault on their identity that the issue evokes. The cartoons com-
pel European Muslims to ask: how can we coexist in a European
society that disrespects our practices and belittles our faith? Non-
Muslim ethnic Europeans wonder the inverse: can Europe pre-
serve its identity in the face of such zealots as Abu Labanand how
will the spread of Islam across the continent alter the European
identity? Identity politics and the fears that infuse them are what
charge debates over such seemingly innocuous issues as the publi-
cation of cartoons or the wearing of headscarves by schoolgirls.
