12 About twenty-five hundred young (or young-at-heart)
people accepted the invitation. The conference took place during the struggle
against the French occupation of the Ruhr district. The popular sentiment of the
gathering echoed the national outrage: “Our Germanyprofoundly humiliated
and mistreatedshall show the newly emerging world that it wants to help in
constructing a better order for humanity.” All the previously touted unity soon
evaporatedhoweverwhen the meetings actually took place. Young representatives
of the Communist party broke up several workshops. At times the conference was
chaotic.

Neverthelessin an article for the SCM newsletterEberhard commented that
“deeply divided and fragmented as it isthe youth movement in all its sections lives
and continues as an arena where the ultimate powers strive for decision…Truly
the whole movement displays a religious striving and seeking.” He appreciated the
Free German creed of truthfulness: “There is no decision for truthfulness without
God himself having a part in it. A person who lives by the truth will experience
