If you genuinely want to stop drinking, people know you are trying, and give you a fair go. The longest I have had sober is 18months, and it wasn't always good, but I did make a lot of progress in that time. Sobriety beats drinking because when I am sober I know I am able to shape my future, I have hope. I have dipped in and out of the 12 steppers for 8 years now. AA in Australia is a bit different from the US from what I can gather. Over here there's not as much emphasis on doing the steps and the whole spiritual kaboodle, which is frankly what puts most people off attending in the first place.
