The female giant panda, named Bai Yun, pushed her way through an unsecured door in the back of her exhibit area on Sunday and bit a staff member working there, zoo spokeswoman Christina Simmons said.
Simmons declined to identify the caretaker or comment on the extent of his or her injuries, citing medical confidentiality policies.
The San Diego Union Tribune newspaper reported that the worker was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Simmons said Bai Yun was quickly returned to her habitat and that the entire incident lasted only about 30 seconds.
"Giant pandas are wild bears," Simmons told Reuters. "They can be aggressive at times. In this case, unfortunately, a door in a non-visitor area was not fully secured. This is extremely rare."
Simmons declined to say if the bite was considered an attack on the worker by the Bai Yun or if zookeepers were concerned with her behavior.
"Pandas are by nature solitary animals. This is a bear that had moved into area where she was unfamiliar. Any number of things could have contributed to her being concerned," Simmons said.
Simmons said the zoo wasn't aware if Bai Yun, who came to the United States in 1996 and was thought to be 20 years old, authentic louis vuitton handbags on sale, had ever bitten anyone before.
The zoo has two other pandas, one an adult and one a young bear just over a year old.
