New studies confirm a strong association between PFC chemicals and human cholesterol levels. Every person that participated in these studies was found to have the chemical in their blood. During an interview by Steve Curwood, of Living on Earth, Jessica Nelson Coach Satchel, a public health researcher at Boston University’s School of Public Health, discussed the two new studies that are raising concerns about PFCs and rising cholesterol levels in the blood of humans.
Nelson says that since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary agreement with DuPont, 3M and other companies to phase out PFCs, the concentrations in blood have been decreasing. But the chemicals stick around in the body for year and they also persist in the environment. That means they are going to be around in the environment for a long time. In addition, some other PFC chemicals that haven't been phased out may break down into PFAS and PFOA.
