Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of PSP
The obvious cause of paralytic shellfish poisoning is eating contaminated shellfish. The shellfish become contaminated from a marine plankton called dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates are a small bacteria that grow abundantly in warmer waters, which is why they are often found during the spring and summer in the Pacific coast. The blooming of these plankton are what cause what is known as a “red tide.” Some species of dinoflagellates create neurotoxins air jordans, and those are the ones that are found in shellfish and cause PSP in humans.
Marine toxins are caused from chemicals that occur naturally in seafood. The chemicals cause the seafood to be diseased, which in turn makes humans sick Jordan 5 V, and if not treated can cause death. The CDC currently lists the most common and deadly seafood toxins in the United States as:
The contaminated seafood does not look, smell or taste bad. When high levels of contaminates are found in harvesting areas, public officials are usually quick enough to close beaches to harvesters and get information to the public. Even with all of the information about marine toxins, it is unfortunate that many still get sick from naturally harvesting shellfish and eating directly from the source. Cooking the contaminated food does not kill the lethal chemicals.

There is no known treatment for PSP. If the symptoms are not too severe, patients usually show improvement within 12 hours after the first suffering symptoms of shellfish poisoning. Death and paralysis are usually a result of a severe reaction and not seeking medical treatment in a timely manner. Doctors will often treat patients with intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea and monitor them until they are improved. Patients suffering from paralysis are put on a ventilator and kept for observation until symptoms improve. The prognosis for those who get PSP is very good. There have been no long term consequences reported by patients who have survived even the most severe symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning.
Symptoms often begin around 30 minutes after eating the contaminated shellfish, but can take up to ten hours. PSP can cause gastrointestinal and neurological problems and may require medical help. Not all of the symptoms of PSP are the same for everybody. The most common effects of PSP are:
What are Marine Toxins?
Paralytic shellfish poisoning is most often found in the shellfish of the colder pacific waters. “Shellfish that have caused this disease include mussels, cockles, clams, scallops, oysters, crabs jordan sc-1, and lobsters,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Thousands of people globally die every year from shellfish and other marine food poisonings; the other thousands that get sick probably think they are dying or wish they were after suffering from these foodborne illnesses.
