Is Jimmer Fredette BYU's Adam Morrison Jersey?
For all of Gonzaga's accomplishments, including Thursday's win over St. Johns, questions in Friday's news conference before they play BYU were mainly focused on one thing: how do you stop Jimmer Fredette?
Robert Sacre, Marquise Carter and Steven Gray had huge smiles on their faces every time a member of the media mentioned their opponent's name. And at one point during the questioning a reporter from Salt Lake City asked what the grins were all about.
"Everywhere I go it's all about Jimmer Fredette," said Carter. "You can't doubt his skills, he's a really good player. He can put up a lot of points at any given point. We're going to try to do our best to contain him and make the others have to work."
Sacre, for one, didn't dismiss the Jimmer per se, but said he wasn't going to be star-struck on Saturday. After all, he said, Gonzaga knows a thing of two about eye-popping, big-time scorers.
"He's a great player," Sacre said of the leading scorer in the nation. "But we also had Adam Morrison Jersey with us before. We've seen great players and we also saw Mickey McConnell (Saint Mary's) who could put up buckets, and we've also seen great players around our league who can put up buckets. We've seen great players all throughout this season."
Ah, yes. Adam Morrison Jersey. Coach Mark Few remembers his star player well and believes Jimmer is like the man with the moustache in many ways. Except that BYU coach Dave Rose probably has it a little easier than he had it back in the day.
"Dave's got it made dealing with Jimmer as opposed to dealing with Adam," Few said jokingly. They're both once in a lifetime players. They're drive, their confidence, their ability to score and how clutch they are. Jimmer reminds me so much of Adam. He hits closely guarded shots and you don't see many guys who can hit closely guarded shots."
Few said he plans to throw several different players at Fredette in an effort to contain him.
"I think we'll probably switch it around. Most of perimeters are pretty verse," he said. "They're had a couple of tough guards on our league – Mickey McConnel at Saint Mary's and Kevin Foster. None of them are on the level of Jimmer, but [Demetri] Goodson is a good on-ball defender. Steven Gray is a good defender. Mike Hart is probably our best defender. Maybe Sacre."
And Few isn't buying that BYU is an easier team to beat because Brandon Davies, a player he recruited and lost, is riding the bench after violating the school's honor code. BYU, he said may have changed somewhat since his suspension, but if they focus more on shooting from the outside they could be even more difficult to defend. Especially if Jimmer gets on a hot streak. |
