human condition as it isand must be.
My suggestion is that one’s hunches about this or that detail having a
larger signifcance be tested against the collected evidence of the novel itself.
For examplein the opening pages Holden mentions that he had “accidently”
forgotten the team’s fencing foils on the subway because he kept getting up
to check the map. His explanation is plausible enoughalthough one can also
understand how members of the fencing team would be exasperated when
they arrived without the equipment necessary to compete. Holdenafter all
was their manager and he should have been paying more attention. Holden’s
pointof courseis that they turned him into a social outcasta pariah. But if
one remembers that the word “foil” is also a term indicating a dramatic coun-
terweightthen the notion of a character without foils takes on an additional
signifcance. Did Salinger intend such a reading? Perhapsperhaps not. Te

Te Catcher in the Rye explores Holden’s life as a char-
acter whose monologue―at times defensiveat times self-justifying―keeps
counterarguments (“foils”) at an arm’s length. Te Holden of breezy mono-
