Since Puritanism was essentially a devotional movement intended to return the English church to a biblically sanctioned purity in its forms of worship, the central emphasis was on the Word as recorded in Scripture and interpreted by preaching. The Bible was seen as the ultimate source of Truth, but the minister was "God's messenger," the "conduit" by means of which scriptural truth was channeled to the people, or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in another popular image, the "breasts" from which believers drew the milk of saving truth. Perhaps the main reason for the form's vitality in Puritan circles was that the art of preaching was governed by the rule of clarity.
