A Devine victory for Langley and Skedden
Paul Langley and Jackie Skedden from the Blenheim Bowling Club edged out Havelock's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Viv Forrester in a thrilling final of the annual Wai Devine Memorial mixed pairs bowls tournament at the Blenheim Workingmen's Club greens last weekend.
Langley and Skedden stormed out to an 8-1 lead after five ends of the 2x4x2 format tournament final only to drop five shots on the sixth, then it was game on.
By the 10th end, Forrester and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], life partners as well as bowls team-mates, had the advantage by one shot. However, Skedden moved the kitty with her last bowl of the 11th end to pick up three shots and give them a two-shot lead heading into the final end. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Forrester could only manage to pick up one, giving the Blenheim pairing a fine victory 12-11.
Three wins were required from four rounds played on Saturday to progress to post-section with 15 teams making it through to the knockout stage.
Eight teams remained after the first knockout round on Sunday, the game of that round between Brian Williams and Lin Green up against the eventual winners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Skedden and Langley. Williams and Green grabbed a late shot on the final end which looked like taking the match into an extra end. However, Langley drove at the kitty with his last bowl to pick up four shots and win.
In other quarterfinals, Phil Welch and Doreen Mott got off to a flyer against Lou George and Bob Dowling, picking up 18 shots on the first five ends to effectively shut them out of the game. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Forrester dished out similar punishment to Maurice Yealands and Annette Broadhurst by leading 18-0 after nine of the allotted 12-end match.
The last quarterfinal saw Allan Pine and Chris Campbell hold their fellow Springlands club members John and Josephine Romano during the first few ends before the Romanos drew away to win comfortably 20-5.
In the semifinals, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Forrester, winners of the event two years ago, were up against last year's winners, the Romanos. The Romanos led 5-2 after four ends but [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] picked up four shots on the fifth to take a lead they never relinquished, eventually winning 12-7.
In the other semifinal, Langley and Skedden played more consistent bowls to win 16-7.
This weekend's main event on the Marlborough bowls calendar is the men's open fours played at Renwick and Havelock on Saturday and Sunday with Havelock the headquarters and finals venue on Sunday. Springlands host the women's open fours on Saturday and Sunday.
