When a person eats foods that contain carbohydrates, starches and other nutrients [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the body converts them to glucose for energy. Glucose is transported from the bloodstream and into cells for energy by a hormone called insulin. When insulin is absent or present in inadequate amounts [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blood levels of glucose or sugar goes up, leading to diabetes. Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the body that can stick to arteries and lead to coronary heart disease. A combination of diabetes and high cholesterol levels increases a person's risk for heart disease.
HDL Cholesterol and Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics keep their LDL levels below 100mg/dl and lower their triglycerides levels to less than 150 mg/dl. The recommended HDL levels for diabetics by the same organization, is a blood level greater 45 mg/dl for men and a blood level greater than 55 mg/dl for women.
LDL or low density lipoprotein is another type of cholesterol. It is transported to cells through the blood and can stick to the arteries. When LDL on the arteries combines with glucose, a type of fat called triglycerides and becomes oxidized, it becomes plaque. The blood vessels are normally flexible and elastic, but in the presence of plaque they become hard and may get narrow or entirely blocked. This condition is known as atherosclerosis and can lead to angina, heart attacks or strokes. Diabetes causes a person's LDL levels to go up, and increases one's risk for heart disease and stroke.
Lifestyle changes focused on controlling blood sugar levels can lead to increased HDL levels, and decreased triglyceride levels. It can also reduce interaction between blood glucose, triglycerides and the two types of cholesterol found in the body. Lifestyle changes one can make include, not smoking or quitting smoking , exercising, and eating a healthy diet made up of whole grains, fruits [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], vegetables, low fat dairy products and low cholesterol foods. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, because physical activity raises HDL levels.
Diabetic dyslipidemia is a condition that occurs in diabetic patients. It is a situation where a diabetic's HDL blood level is low, triglycerides are high and LDL is at higher levels but in a smaller, denser form that make them stick to the arteries more easily. Diabetic dyslipidemia increases a person's risk for heart disease due to low amounts of HDL which prevents LDL from accumulating on the arteries, high amounts of triglycerides which leads to HDL depletion and increased amounts of the smaller denser LDL and formation of the smaller, denser LDL that increases the amount of plaque on the arteries. Also, LDL tends to stay longer in the bloodstream in the presence of high blood glucose levels while HDL spends less time in the bloodstream.

HDL or high density lipoprotein is a type of cholesterol found in the body. It transports excess cholesterol from different parts of the body to the liver for disposal. It also removes a type of cholesterol called low density lipoprotein from the arteries. It helps reduce one's risk for heart disease and is often referred to as good cholesterol. High blood glucose levels as found in diabetes lowers blood levels of HDL.
