In short, they want to become the San Francisco Giants of the NFL.
So why should the 49ers or anyone else think they can pull off a Giants-like run to the postseason?
For starters, they can point to the rest of the NFC West.
"I'm very proud of what they were able to do, what they were able to overcome, the setbacks and what have you," 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said after [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] won their first World Series title in 53 seasons by the bay.
The Giants were armed with Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Madison Bumgarner. The 49ers come packing Alex Smith, David Carr and Troy Smith.
The comparison isn't a perfect fit, but then, these 49ers are anything but perfect.
The 49ers play their division peers in five of the final eight games, with three coming at home. The Giants won their division because they finally figured out how to win in their division. It must be the same for the 49ers, who went 5-1 against the NFC West last season.
For starters, the baseball Giants weren't in last place midway through the season. They started well enough to stay within arm's length of first place all along. It's the 49ers who stumbled to an 0-5 start and sit at 2-6 during the bye.
The Giants posted the second-best record in baseball after the All-Star break because they could throw the ball with the best of them. The 49ers aren't the second best or All-Star at anything because their inability to throw the ball has cost them dearly against the best of them. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
As bad as the 49ers have been, and they've been bad, they sit just two games out of first place in a division in which all four teams have allowed more points than they have scored. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The 49ers took the bye week off to get back on Pacific time, rest their well-traveled bodies, and reacquaint themselves with family and friends after an 11-day road trip to Charlotte, N.C., and London and back.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
"That's good stuff. For us, it's a matter of ... as I said before, for some teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would be pressure, but for us, it's an opportunity. And that's what we see and that's how we're going to take the second half of the season." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Next on the agenda, with the season half done: Grow beards, wear rally thongs and make a second-half push through the Western division, through the playoffs and into a ticker-tape parade.
Looking to follow Giants' lead
The Seahawks are 4-4 after consecutive blowout losses. The Rams are 4-4 with no wins on the road in advance of Sunday's visit to Candlestick Park. The Cardinals are 3-5 after three straight losses.
