In 721 he ordained the Xuanzong Emperor (713–56) into a
lay Daoist lineage and initiated him into some Daoist texts (Kohn
and Kirkland2000p. 347). The Highest Clarity deities were

granted authority over the civic deitiesand thus the Highest
Clarity lineage effectively supplanted the lineage of the Celestial
Masters as the ‘Daoism of record’ at the court. The emperor estab-
lished Sima in a monastery near the capitalwhere he devoted
himself to a life of scholarship. As the principles and techniques of
Highest Clarity Daoism came to be absorbed into the Daoist
mainstreamso also the Way of Highest Clarity came to be
eclipsed by other forms of Daoist tradition. The thirty-fifth
Celestial Master was given authority over the ordination of
Highest Clarity priests under the reign of the Lizong Emperor of
the Southern Song dynasty (r. 1225–64)effectively ending the
power of the lineage to maintain control over the transmission of
its own teachings and practices (Davis2002p. 3. One of the
last important Shangqing patriarchs was Liu Dabin (fl. 1317–2
who wrote a history of Maoshan Daoism.
