[b]Fight headlines Top Prospects Game[/b]
TORONTO -- Don Cherry took a cue from Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson.
Cherry opted not to place a wager on the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game after the Leafs' bench boss was issued a fine for offering his players a cash incentive for a game last week.
When asked if Cherry and friend [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] made a bet on the game, Cherry said: "Not after Ron Wilson. I didn't want to get in trouble."
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] did not coach in the game as he took time to be with family. He became a grandfather last week.
Kingston Frontenacs head coach Doug Gilmour, who took over behind the Team [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] bench, responded to Cherry's comments by saying wryly: "two Kingston guys don't bet."
"Very pure," Cherry continued.
Cherry should be happy he didn't place a wager on the outcome of the game. His team was hammered 7-1, a surprising outcome after his team led 13-3 in shots after the first period of play.
Several junior club team players were either teammates or playing against each other in the game. The Saint John Sea Dogs had four players in the game as Jonathan Huberdeau, Zack Phillips and Nathan Beaulieu played for Team [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] while Tomas Jurco represented Team Cherry.
When asked if there was any friendly wager between teammates, Phillips could only smile and decline the notion.
"Surprisingly, we didn't really see much of the other (Top Prospects) team when we were here so we were all pretty friendly about it," he said. "I was just thinking maybe we should have now that we won, but no one said too much before (the game)."
Phillips and his teammates were able to appreciate the work done by Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Liam Liston. He was the only goaltender who did not surrender a goal in the game, stopping all 18 shots he faced.
Liston and Owen Sound goaltender Jordan Binnington actually decided amongst themselves who would start the game.
"He played well (in the skills competition on Tuesday) and he played well (on Wednesday)," Gilmour said of Liston.
But he wasn't the only player receiving his share of praise following the game. Gilmour, who usually coaches against many of the players that were now on his team, was able to appreciate the skill from his one-time players.
"(Team [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] assistant coach and Brampton Battalion head coach) Stan (Butler) and I were talking about it on the bench a couple times," Gilmour said. "It's amazing when you have players on your team what you see they can do compared to when you're playing against them and seeing a different role.
"It's just so different when you're sitting there watching them when you're coaching them than it is when you're coaching against them."
As is often the case, a fight headlined the game. Saskatoon Blades defenceman Duncan Siemens gave Sven Bartschi a rough ride along the back wall and continued shoving him after Bartschi was on the ice. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] stepped in to separate the two before David Musil went toe-to-toe with Siemens.
"I think it was a great show of teamsmanship," Nugent-Hopkins described. "Bartschi was getting cross-checked in the head and I kind of just stepped in to separate the two and Musil saw that happening and he kind of just stepped in and fought Siemens."
When asked what he thought of the fight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cherry took the opportunity to praise the Czech defender and poked fun at his father, Frank Musil, who played nearly 800 games in the National Hockey League.
"It was pretty good," Cherry said. "I guess that was Musil's second fight, eh. Pretty good -- better than his old man, anyhow."
