are Martin and Adrian.
This is our review of the famous Kelly (Volcano) Kettle for which we did a instructional video recently, which was great fun to do.
What is a Kelly kettle? A Kelly Kettle is a piece of portable equipment used for outdoor camping, wilderness survival, bushcraft, fishing ,trekkers, scouts and family picnics alike.
It is constructed of Aluminium or Stainless Steel, it comes in 3 sizes in the Aluminium and 1 size in the Stainless Steel. It has no moving parts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so technically there is nothing to wear out/break or replace, that makes a refreshing change in this day and age of a throw-away society.
The kettle it self is shaped like a flask that you would carry your tea or coffee in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a small hollow hole in the top which opens up at the bottom of the kettle, this is known as the chimney.
We will explain about that later.
Also at the top of the kettle of to one side is a spout, the spout enables you to pour water into and out of the twin walled chamber of the kettle.
Once again we will explain about this a little later.
The Kelly kettle has a carry/pouring handle and a chain which is attached to the bottom of the kettle, with a cork attached to the other end of the chain, the cork is used as a stopper for the spout and an additional aid for pouring the water from the kettle.
The Kelly kettle comes with a base/fire bowl of which the kettle stands on when heating the water in the chamber of the kettle.
The fire bowl looks like a mixing bowl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has a hole in the side of it. we will explain why shortly.
That is a brief description of a Kelly kettle.
HOW TO USE THE KELLY KETTLE
Separate the kettle from the fire bowl. Place the bowl on a level/flat surface, but please remember to take care as the bowl will get hot, as it will have a live fire in it.
Place a small amount of tinder and kindling in the fire bowl, this can be small dry Twigs, dry Grass, Pine cones, Birch Bark and a little screwed up Paper if it helps or maybe a Firelighter block for the less experienced.
Now remove the cork from the spout at the top of the kettle and place the kettle on the base/fire bowl.
Pour water into the spout, which will fill the twin walled chamber of the kettle. (Important) Do NOT fill the chamber to the top, because as the fire heats the kettle so does the water, which will get to boiling point very soon and bubble over out of the spout, which could splash onto anyone nearby and scold you.
Now with care, light the tinder in your fire bowl through the hole in the side of the bowl, if the fire is struggling to take hold, turn the hole in the bowl into the wind. This will give a draught into the fire bowl and help to ignite it faster.
To refuel your fire you do not have to remove the kettle from the base,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simply but CAREFULLY drop small Twigs/Sticks etc down through the chimney at the top of the kettle.
Please be aware, depending on how much fuel you place into the fire bowl, this may cause flames to shoot out of the top of the kettle like a Volcano, Hence the terminology-Volcano Kettle.
Now you need to get your tea/coffee ready, because only 2-3 minutes from now, you will have a boiling hot kettle of hot water.
To remove the kettle from the fire bowl, take hold of the handle in one hand, and the cork in the other hand.
Lift evenly and away from the fire. NEVER hold the handle directly over the chimney as this could result in you being burnt.
You should never leave the kettle on the fire bowl without water in it, as this could cause it to explode.
Any remaining water you have left in the kettle can be used to extinguish the fire in your bowl.
Please always respect the landscape, be responsible and leave it as you found it, as people like Ray Mears and others do.
Martin and myself Adrian have done an instructional video on the Kelly Kettle, please by all means take a look.
We hope that this
