Bigger is better
If you don't see results quickly, it can be easy to lose interest in knitting, so don't choose a yarn that's too thin - a scarf will take ages to finish because the stitches don't build up quickly enough. If you're a beginner use chunky yarn and fat needles (between 8mm and 12mm), and you can knit yourself a scarf in an evening.
Group therapy
A knitting group can be a great way to improve your skills. Everyone learns at a different pace, so you'll always have someone to help you. Check knitchicks.co.uk to find a local group, or start one with friends. Meet somewhere neutral like a caf - not at someone's home because then it becomes more about hosting. I have a knitting group at my workplace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and we meet every Friday lunchtime. By the time we go back to work we're all very relaxed.

It's easier than it looks
Many people assume knitting is very complicated, because it looks like a ridiculous feat of manual dexterity. It's actually very simple. My mother is a great seamstress and taught me how to sew when I was little, so even at five years old I was making horrendous outfits for my dolls. I kept sewing until about six years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when I picked up some knitting needles and a book on how to knit. I've been addicted ever since, and even knit on the bus.

Start small
Make two or three scarves before you start on anything else. Then graduate to a cowl, which is just a scarf sewn together in a circle, but feels a lot more substantial. Most people start knitting to make gifts for birthdays or for newborns. So once you've mastered the b[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], buy a book, ask your grandmother (or borrow someone else's grandmother) or have a look on YouTube for more complex stitches. Rachael Matthews, the co-owner of the east London yarn shop Prick Your Finger , is the queen of knitting the unexpected - everything from hand grenades to Battenberg cakes.
The two important stitches
There are only two stitches in knitting - a knit stitch and a purl stitch. What's complicated is combining them. Make your first scarf in knit stitch, which will give you a bobbly look. Once you get better, introduce the purl stitch, which sits far flatter. Then you can combine the two for different effects. For example, alternating between knit and purl stitches will give you a flat 'stocking' stitch, and two knits followed by two purls will result in a ribbing effect. Don't panic if you drop a stitch - just put it back on the needle using a crochet hook.
A good yarn
If you choose a really beautiful yarn, whatever you make will look lovely. You need two balls per scarf, and the best-quality stuff will cost about 5 a ball. Yarn nowadays is a far cry from the wool your grandmother used to make scratchy sweaters from. My favourite places to shop are Loop in north London and purlsoho.com ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is based in New York.
