Fashion is a kind of beauty, let us hope that
WITH the arrival of the Haute Couture collections each season come the same old debates about whether it's still relevant; what it means; why fashion houses do it; why they don't… and if you really want to know the score, Suzy Menkes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fashion director of the International Herald Tribune, is qualified for the final word. "It's wonderful, I love it," she says. "Fashion couldn't be the same without it. This season was confusing as there was such a lot going on with cruise collections and early autumn collections and so on. I suppose the designers are taking advantage of the fact that everybody is in town. Some of the big couture houses perhaps weren't as attention seeking as usual this season. Lacroix was enchanting. Some have said that the season was too commercial for couture but I don't agree with that. You can't use the word "commercial" where a John Galliano Dior collection is involved. That really was extraordinary." And the highlight of her week? "It was Valentino's moment really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with his being awarded the Legion d'Honneur,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Menkes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was herself bestowed with the award last year.
