MARIE HILL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Luke Brooks and Dean Quinn will have gone home last night as three very happy fashion students - the young designers found themselves at the receiving end of the L'Oreal Professionnel Awards, as winner and runners-up respectively, at the?Central Saint Martins BA (Hons) Fashion show, held at Bethnal Green's York Hall.
"Congratulations to all of the students - marrying technical abilities with their own vision," enthused Caryn Franklin who, along with designers?Mark Fast and Peter Jensen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], presented the awards following a 40-student showcase, in which we saw everything from gowns constructed from pagoda-shaped skirts (which?posed somewhat of a challange?for the models walking in them), to neon and padded puffas, light bulb-shaped headdresses and bird box accessories.
Particularly witty was a sporty collection from Kye which, playing on proportion, drew on a body-building aesthetic that transpired through the garment's details - so pockets became pecs and what would otherwise be cutesy jumpers depicted the wearer's insides. And we particularly liked Levi Palmer's cool and calm take on the cowboy with a Western-inspired collection of menswear in a pastel palette.
As the precursor to the college's famous?London Fashion Week MA show,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is the place to get ahead of the fashion game, spotting new talent, new trends or just those that show no signs of abating. And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just as we have seen on the autumn/winter 2009-10 catwalks (and are currently experiencing from our own spring/summer 2009 wardrobes), shoulders were big - on blazers and tunics, anchored with bling or adorned with pearls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tassels and plenty of fringing.
But that's not to say there wasn't a suitable sartorial helping of all things natural an earth-inspired: cosy, woollen homespun styles came from Shaun Samson and Caroline Jarvis, while reptilian armour and fossil references could be seen in Holly Fox Lee's puffed and padded jackets and, again, Caroline Jarvis whose pastel palette collection featured a jumper with a spine woven into the back.
Fast added: "I was honoured to be at the show last night amongst old friends and mentors."
Futurism, too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had more than a moment with cyborg-style offerings from Neil Young and his wet-look menswear; Jamie Cockerill and his Terminator body-con ensembles, which were seemingly stapled together in their construction; and Ara Jo's nude and sequin bodystockings, joined at the knee.
