Jerry Scheidel, governor of Moose Lodge 1547 in Middletown, said a smoking ban was proposed but never made it to a vote.
“We’ve … discussed it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and our membership is opposed to it,” he said. The club already has nine smoke-eaters — machines that filter the air — to try to accommodate nonsmokers, Scheidel said. Smith said his lodge has also had success with that technology.
Private clubs throughout the nation are either choosing to go smokeless or being forced to clear the air by workplace laws meant to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke, said Bronson Frick, associate director of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights [ [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]].
“It’s definitely a national trend,” Frick said. “Increasingly, even in private clubs, people don’t want to have to breathe toxic air. … We’ve heard of a number of different private clubs around the country that are going smoke-free as part of an effort to refresh their membership.”
Smoke-free private clubs were not part of the picture when the state legislature approved the bar and restaurant smoking ban in 2003. Opponents predicted that bar patrons, especially customers of working-class taverns, would flock to the private clubs where they could relax indoors with a beer and a butt.
A group of especially frustrated bar owners tried to get the state law declared unconstitutional,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the state Supreme Court in 2007 upheld the ban and the legislature’s exemption of private clubs and casinos.
Not all clubs are moving toward banning smoking, though. At the Hartford Elks Lodge No. 19, Ray Smith,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the exalted ruler,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or president, said that the group’s members had not considered instituting a ban. He said that about half of the lodge’s members smoked, and that smoking was “actually a draw” for many. Some people go to the lodge, he said, because the state’s anti-smoking regulation makes it so that “they can’t smoke anyplace else.”
