You began your career with Roland Mouret - what were the key things you learned from your time with him?
"I learned a lot about draping and flattering the female form."
Did you know they were going to wear it or just find out when you saw the pictures?
"I didn't know either of them were definitely going to wear it. You never really know until you see the pictures."
Which other stars would you like to dress?
"Well, I'm quite dichotomous about this because I love Leigh Lezark and Jennifer Connelly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I also love the maverick style of Bjork,?Tilda Swinton and Grace Jones. I think this is because I am very interested in ready-to-wear fashion, but I also do costume design. I made really cool outfits for?Beth Ditto last year and she's a real inspiration, I definitely want to dress her again. For me, clothes and fashion are hugely important,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but being involved in the creation of an image or a 'look' is very important and satisfying."
You've created looks for Alison Goldfrapp - did you work with her directly?
"Alison is very creative and really knows what she wants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I respect her for that. She's in control of the visual side of her work."

Victoria Beckham wore the same dress - what do you think it is that women love about it?
"That dress is very 'visual'. It says, 'look at me', but not in a vulgar way. It's cute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flattering and has a certain edge to it."

HIS is the distinctive, colourful dress which has been worn by both Victoria Beckham and Olivia Palermo?in the past few months. We caught up with Royal College of Art graduate Julian J Smith to talk muses, styling and other designers.
How did both come about, did you dress either of them yourself, or was it through a stylist?
"Olivia went into a store in New York called Debut (where my collection is currently exclusively stocked in the US), she saw it and loved it. Victoria had heard about my collection so she asked to see a selection of pieces."

You also spent time working with Jonathan Saunders and Erdem - did they influence your use of print?
"Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I think they did, but I've always had an interest in graphics and prints. I'm obsessed with contrast and colour."
