tigate this question furtherit is necessary to examine more care-
fully the ideology that the Way of Great Peace espoused. This will
also help us to understand the concept of power as it applied to this
early Daoist movement.
Our understanding of the worldview of the Way of Great
Peace is based largely on a text known as the Scripture of Great
Peace (Taiping jing). The extant edition of this text dates only as far
back as the Ming dynastyover a thousand years later than the
original movementand so scholars debate how much of the
extant edition of the text actually corresponds to the original
worldview. Any assessment of the worldview of the original

Nonethelessthe principal ideasas we saw in 2are that
heavenearth and humans exist in a symbiotic relationship based
upon the principle of mutual communication. The text decisively
