Close to 2,000 celebrities, friends and fashionistas crowded into the steeply banked tiers of seats surrounding the arena,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to seen the show marking four decades of Kenzo.
Antonio Marras, the creative director of Kenzo, chose the fascinating Cirque d'Hiver (Winter Circus), in Paris for an exhilarating show-in-the-round to mark the 40th anniversary of the house.
Marras, from Sardinia, who made his debut as creative director of Kenzo, for the fall/winter 2004 season, showed his own spring/summer 2011 collection first. He played with loose, unstructured silhouettes, given shape with drawstring details, in Oriental-inspired prints of abstract cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums, or stripes and checked patchwork patterns in darker, greys and navy. Long tunics and dresses were worn over trousers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tied at the calf, and kimono-robes and djellabas were worn over drop-waist dresses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all accessorised with matching or patent, geisha-style platforms.

The Cirque d'Hiver, built in 1852, has a fascinating fashion history, as well as being regularly used for circuses, dressage events, Turkish wrestling, and as one of the locations for the film, Trapeze . This was where Richard Avedon shot his famous 1955 fashion photograph, "Dovima and the Elephants".
Backstage, the models were having hair and make-up done, and dressing, in the brightly-painted "stables", while the excitement built in the audience, with fashion press and buyers dashing from the Alexander McQueen show on the other side of town.

"The Sardinian clothing, as decorated, sumptuous and layered as the kimono is sober,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simple and essential, still resembles certain aspects of traditional Japanese dress - in the colours, the prints, the textures and the decorative elements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Marras explained.

Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Marras delivered his tribute to the Kenzo heritage. He had been through the house's extensive archives to recreate the Kenzo spirit, re-styling forty outfits- one for each year - as a folkloric fashion tale of "A Japanese in Sardinia", in a tribute to Kenzo Takada who founded his brand in Paris in 1970. Blanket-knits, Matrioshka dresses, tribal patchwork, fluorescent lace skirts, Edwardian jackets, quilting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crochet, embroidery, tapestries, encrusted stones, and beading, accessorised with three-foot high hats and scarves, merged into a kaleidoscopic tableaux of colourful, creative heritage as the stage slowly revolved in front of the audience.
