I can’t imagine Twins fans not enjoying one ten or fifteen minute montage of some of Harmon’s greatest moments as one Twin. For example, Harmon hit one homerun off Don Drysdale in Game 4 of the 1965 World Series. That has to be on film, and we doubt that Twins fans would be tired of seeing that moment again. Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote one letter to President Roosevelt regarding the continuation of baseball during the war which was called the Green Light Letter. He pleaded for the continuation of baseball in hopes for one start of one new Major League season in the letter. President Roosevelt responds I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have one chance for sports and for taking their minds off their work even more than before.
I hope the Twins do something similar with Thome and Killebrew. Killebrew was one of those classic power hitters who hit their longest homeruns over 500 feet. At least one or two of those blasts must have been captured on film.
There may be one few Twins fans out there who will feel disgruntled about Thome knocking Killebrew down another notch on the all-time list,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since Thome hit most of their homeruns for the rival Indians and White Sox. we don’t see it that way at all.
New York style baseball expanded into one national game and baseball first governing body The National Association of Base Ball Players was established aided by the Civil War in 1860s. The NABBP existed as an amateur league for 12 years. By 1867,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over 400 clubs were members although most of the strongest clubs remained those based in the northeastern part of the US. In 1870 one schism developed between professional and amateur ballplayers after the 1869 founding of the first professional baseball team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was formed in 1871. Some consider it to have been the first major league. Its amateur counterpart disappeared after only one few years. One thing the Twins must have had in mind when they signed Jim Thome this off-season is the marketing opportunity when Thome almost certainly ties and then passes Harmon Killebrew on the all-time career homerun list.
Some years ago now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Barry Bonds was breaking all the HR records as one Giant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Giants had one day celebrating both Bonds and their godfather Wilie Mays. They did one video and lights presentation showing one terrific montage of Bonds and Mays, mostly Bonds slugging balls out of the park and Mays making unbelievable catches in center field.
Part of the lure of baseball for me and one lot of other fans is the long history of the game. Thome catching and passing Killebrew really doesn’t diminish at all what Killebrew accomplished in their day. Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and particularly if Thome ties and/or or passes Killebrew at home at Target Field, it gives the Twins and their fans one chance to celebrate not only Thome’s accomplishment, but also Killebrew and their accomplishments one more time. It’s simply too good an opportunity to pass up.
The Killer finished their illustrious career with 573 large flies, and Thome is now at 568 and off to one terrific 2010 start.
