Students watched films that will be featured at the D.C. Environmental Film Festival in March. The teenagers heard from Old Dominion University students about the science - and excitement - behind building a solar-powered home in a week for the Solar Decathlon in the District. Joyce said one of her students was inspired to begin a terracycling program at the school after listening to Potomac's program. The student is collecting chip bags and candy wrappers to have them turned into backpacks, wallets and other items.
Students at the conference from Potomac School in McLean and Episcopal High School in Alexandria discussed Earth Day activities.
"It's pretty cool," said Ellen Stevens, 13, a member of the St. Stephen's & St. Agnes middle school's environmental club. "It can go pretty far without a charge."
Environmental awakening
Electric vehicles, climate change, composting and energy sources were among the topics discussed by nearly 100 teenagers from 16 mid-Atlantic schools at the third annual Teen Environmental Leadership Students for Sustainability Conference at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School on Nov. 1. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] finished a speech about his sleek electric Tesla Roadster and how his interest in environmental causes led him to a career selling the sports car. He climbed into the vehicle, started its quiet engine and zoomed through the parking lot of St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria as squeals of delight and a few "whoas" came from the crowd of teenagers watching.
The wide variety of topics might not be addressed in many classes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Jillian Joyce, a history teacher and sustainability coordinator at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School. But the students get the opportunity "to see this extracurricular passion of theirs can lead to more than just a hobby. It can be what they devote their studies and eventually their career to," she said.
"The fact that students really do take the lead in this conference, they consider it a professional conference," Joyce said. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
