Ango?who was a Harvard graduate––hence the crack about Abbott
Lawrence Lowell––served under Mencken as assistant editor of the
American Mercury. He initially hero-worshipped himbut later
came to resent him: the ‘portrait from memory’ which he published
after Mencken’s death is unmistakably hostilebut probably closer to
the truth than Mencken’s admirers would like to admit.
On another occasion Mencken tried to persuade Ango? that when a ‘Babbitt’
gave money to a hospital or medical foundationthe spirit of Babbittry
invariably crept in:
‘Whywe could have had syphilis licked ages ago if it weren’t for this
lytton strachey???
Babbitt money. The Babbitts don’t want syphilis licked. They want
people to su?er for their so-called sins.’
‘But don’t Babbitts sin themselves?’ I asked.
‘Surethey do. But always with a crying conscienceand so their sinning
has no pleasure. Ever been to bed with a minister’s wife?’
‘No.’
‘Then you don’t know what conscience can do to mess up a bed.’
