Taking a great snapshot is pretty easy these days with all of the fine photographic gadgetry out on the market.
“I now want my photographs to be more meaningful and purposeful
“It’s art and science coming together. It’s natural history and a new genre of book. This takes photography to a higher level.

A tremendous amount of physical effort, time, research and collaboration has gone into the making of Motherstone, and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] says he did it largely to bring about awareness and knowledge of the land that people in the Cariboo-Chilcotin call home.
“People look at the pictures and just don’t realize where they come from.”
help me see the landscape from a different perspective.”
The three sets of eyes
That book and book number 10, Spirit in the Grass, which celebrates the Cariboo-Chilcotin grasslands, were edited by award-winning B.C. author Harold Rhenisch and he came on board to research and write the text for Motherstone.
“The area has virtually never been photographed and hiked to this extent. Many of the images in the book have never been published.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] researched the subject area and collected his images for Motherstone over a two-year period.
Now, after decades of successfully photographing the beauty that British Columbia and its people have to offer the world, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has elevated his craft to a higher level, and the evidence is in his new book Motherstone: British Columbia’s Volcanic Plateau.
Many of the photographs were taken in locations, which required a two-day hike to reach, but this 70-year-old is no stranger to exploring the outdoors. A lifelong outdoor adventurer, he started an eco-tourism business back when the industry was in its infancy and continued to work as a wilderness guide for 35 years until the time came when he could rely on the sale of his books as his income.
For the hardships, there were rewards of immeasurable value.
“It was an amazing feeling. You’re in a volcano filled with amazing art created by the elements and light.”
From the air, he got a sense of what he was dealing with, but it was while he was on foot that he got his images. The trio persevered with swamps, rain, intense heat and snow, and was guided by map and compass to find what they were looking for.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] will launch Motherstone on Oct. 16 at Martin Exeter Hall with a slide presentation and talk about the making of the book. The presentation starts at 7:30 p.m., but doors open at 6:30, and admission is free of charge.
Jammed with spectacular photos of the Cariboo-Chilcotin volcanic regions, Motherstone is as much an educational tool as it is a compendium of artwork.

and about the value of the natural world, biodiversity and beauty.”
This perfect marriage of fact and photographic finery is the direction [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has followed since putting together his ninth book, Bowron Lakes: A Lifetime Journey.
Another unforgettable instance was when the party hiked down into an extinct volcano where [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is convinced that nobody has ever walked before.
“Coming over a place called Red Rock Pass, I had no idea what was on the other side. We got to the top and were greeted by a landscape that gave the feeling of a prehistoric volcanic era. The colours and the shapes created a staggering beauty. Tears actually welled up in my eyes as I looked out over it.”
As proven by the photos, the landscape is a rocky canvas of brilliant colours and textures, and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] approached it as a painter, imagining what he wanted from his images, and formulating the process for the camera to capture them.
What [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] refers to as Motherstone includes a chain of shield volcanoes in the Anahim Lake area, which is located in the Itcha, Ilgachuz and Rainbow mountains. They are remote, and apart from the mountain goat tracks that traverse the lonely lava rock terrain, very few have explored the alpine areas, says [link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
“Mike researches and hikes. Rita is very good at seeing the small world that I would miss, and I see the big world.
His partner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rita Geisbrecht, and good friend Mike Duffy accompany [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] on most of his photo-finding missions and hiked with him with 60-pound packs on their backs for his treks into the volcanic mountains.
108 Mile resident [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one of Canada’s foremost outdoor photographers, once considered himself as a master of the snapshot.
It’s the 11th book of fine photography that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has self-published since 1991, when his first, The Bowron Lakes Companion Guide Book, came out.
Dr. Mary Lou Bevier, of University of British Columbia, was the scientific consultant and verified the information.
