the idea of ‘ignorance’ to cover the great range of states in which
terrible acts are committed. This would include the Macbeths’
ignorance – and King Lear’s – of the consequences of their acts. It
might be better to turn the issue round and say that tragedies ask
what it means to say that ‘we know what we are doing’. Or indeed
that we know who ‘we’ are who are doing it (or in Hamlet’s case
not doing it). Teiresias tells Oedipus: ‘you are blind in your earsin
your mindand in your eyes’ (
Oedipus Tyrannus371). ‘[H]e hath
ever but slenderly known himself’one of Lear’s daughters (Regan)
says of him (I. i. 292–3). But this is generally true of characters in
tragedy. They demonstrate the partiality with which we know
ourselves. We cannot possibly know all the meanings of what we
doincluding all their consequencesunless like Teiresias we are
cursed with the vision of the gods. As Arthur Miller painstakingly
